4th Greater China Hotel Business Sustainability Index 2023 Results

The 4th Hotel Business Sustainability Index (Hotel BSI) evaluated 38 listed hotel companies (29 in Greater China and 9 international hotel chains) based on their CSR performance for the financial year 2021-2022, or calendar year 2022.

Overall Performance

This year's Hotel BSI recorded a significant overall score increase of 14%, underpinned by the industry’s growing commitment to ESG excellence. While the CSR Practice score experienced a slight decline, there were substantial improvements in CSR Value and CSR Management, laying a solid foundation for enhancing CSR Practice and Impact. All regions demonstrated enhanced CSR performance, with hotel companies in Mainland China achieving an impressive progress of nearly 60% increase in scores. This was largely attributed to their improved transparency through the publication of independent ESG reports, which narrowed previous performance gaps among regions.

Rating Distribution

55% of the evaluated hotel companies reached the “Performer” level or above (60 points or higher), reflecting a 5% increase from the previous year. Notably, a significant milestone was achieved with the first company ever attaining the “Exemplar” rating (90-100 points).

Stakeholder Engagement

In response to the new normal following the COVID-19 pandemic, hotel companies revitalised their CSR engagements, focusing on key stakeholder groups such as customers, employees, the environment and investors—essential elements for their hospitality businesses. However, community engagement declined due to ongoing public health concerns related to COVID-19. Additionally, interactions with government and suppliers decreased, largely due to reduced cooperation compared to the early pandemic. Reinforcing these ties is vital for achieving long-term business sustainability.

The results of the 4th Hotel BSI illustrated a period of adaptation as businesses navigated the post-pandemic landscape. Engagements with customers, employees, the environment and investors have gradually increased, alongside steady improvements in ESG performance. This reflected the ongoing sustainability efforts of hotel companies despite the ongoing challenges.

The Top 10 list featured three international hotel chains, four Macau companies, two from Hong Kong and one from China, marking the first time a company from Mainland China made the Top 10.
