This year’s Hotel Business Sustainability Index (Hotel BSI) assessed 38 listed hotel companies (29 in Greater China and 9 international hotel chains) based on their CSR performance of the financial year 2020-2021, or calendar year 2021.
The 3rd Hotel BSI maintained a continued upward trend in overall score, marking a 2.5% increase from the previous index. Notably, Macao achieved remarkable progress in CSR performance, with average Hotel BSI scores surging by about 10%. Meanwhile, despite Mainland China recording the lowest score among all regions, a commendable annual growth of 4.6% reflected a heightened commitment and efforts to enhance its CSR initiatives.

50% of the evaluated hotel companies reached the “Performer” level or above (60 points or higher out of 100), up by 8% in the previous index. Moreover, a 2.5-fold increase in the number of companies classified as “Pace-setter, scoring between 80-89 points. Despite these improvements, no company has yet achieved the “Exemplar” status.

The global outbreak of COVID-19 has inevitably led to a slowdown in CSR engagement across various stakeholder groups. However, a notable exception was observed in government-related practices, which saw a 16.3% increase. This surge reflected hotel companies’ proactive compliance measures in response to governmental anti-epidemic regulations.

The notable advancements highlighted in the 3rd Hotel BSI have reaffirmed the hotel industry’s continued dedication to CSR amidst the ongoing challenges posed by the global COVID-19 health crisis. Looking ahead to the 4th Hotel BSI, our commitment to nurturing a sustainability mindset among hotel companies remains unwavering. We are dedicated to fostering the adoption of CSR as a progressive business model that drives business sustainability.
The Top 10 list featured five international hotel chains, four Macau companies, and two from Hong Kong.
