This year, the Hotel Business Sustainability Index (Hotel BSI) revealed a significant leap forward in sustainability practices within the Greater China hotel industry. The index assessed 38 listed hotel companies (29 in Greater China and 9 international hotel chains) based on their CSR performance of the 2019-20 financial year or calendar year 2020.
Overall, the Hotel BSI average score has increased by nearly 12%. This notable improvement can be attributed primarily to the improvement in the areas of CSR management and practices. The greatest overall improvements were made by companies in the Greater China region, in descending order: Macao, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China. While international chains saw a slight dip compared to the 1st Hotel BSI, they still outperformed Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mainland China.

A remarkable 42% of the indexed hotel companies achieved “Performer” level or above (60 points or higher out of 100), a drastic increase from 17% in the 1st Hotel BSI. This demonstrated the industry’s significant shift towards sustainable practices. However, no constituent reached the “Exemplar” level.

Positive growth was observed in terms of CSR practices across all seven stakeholder groups. However, efforts in meeting regulatory requirements need further attention.

The 2nd Hotel BSI results demonstrated a growing commitment to CSR within the hotel industry. As we continue to assess, benchmark and promote these advancements, we remain committed to fostering more sustainable practices that benefit both the industry and our communities.
The Top 10 list featured four international hotel chains, four Macau companies, and two from Hong Kong.
