We are thrilled to launch the 1st Greater China Hotel Business Sustainability Index (Hotel BSI), a pioneering initiative to benchmark and foster responsible hotel business practices in Greater China. The 1st Hotel BSI evaluated the annual business sustainability performance of 30 listed hotel companies within Greater China alongside six major international hotel chains, based on their CSR performance during the 2018-19 financial year or calendar year 2019.
The findings revealed notable regional variances in CSR performance. International and Macao hotel companies led the way with average Hotel BSI scores exceeding 60 points, demonstrating stronger commitment to CSR. On the other hand, hotel companies in Mainland China recorded the lowest average score of 27.5 points, underscoring substantial room for improvement in their CSR strategies across the Value-Process-Impact framework.
50% of the evaluated hotel companies achieved the “Practicer” level or above, scoring at least 50 points. However, none of the companies reached the “Exemplar” level (90-100 points), suggesting a journey ahead to achieve exemplary sustainability standards.
The analysis of CSR practices across various stakeholder groups showed that hotel companies had a keen focus on customer care and investor relations, with both areas scoring above 60 points on average. In contrast, engagement with government bodies and suppliers scored lower, pointing to areas where hotel companies can further enhance their CSR initatives.
The 1st Hotel BSI marked a pivotal step forward in our dedication to fostering sustainable practices within the hospitality industry. By identifying the areas for improvement, we aim to drive continuous enhancement in hotel companies’ CSR performance, thereby contributing positive impacts to the industry and the wider community.
The Top 10 list featured five international hotel chains, two companies from Hong Kong, two from Macau, and one from Taiwan.
