5th Hotel Business Sustainability Index Results
The 5th Hotel Business Sustainability Index (Hotel BSI) evaluated 38 listed hotel companies (29 in Greater China and 9 international hotel chains) based on their CSR performance for the financial year 2022-2023, or calendar year 2023.
Overall Performance
This year’s Hotel BSI recorded steady improvement, with the hotel sector average score at the Performer level (60 – 69 points). The overall score rose from 61.53 in the 4th Hotel BSI to 64.74 in the 5th, a 5.2% increase.
- Value (+7.1%) and Management (+7.2%) showed strong growth, reflecting well-established ESG vision and management systems. Practice (+3.2%) remained stable.
- Impact score (41.44) continues to underperform, highlighting the need for measurable progress in outcome-driven sustainability.
Rating Distribution
- 84.2% of companies achieved Practicer (50 – 59 points) or above, marking a 7.9% increase and reflecting growing maturity in ESG performance beyond entry level.
- Notably, 2 companies reached Exemplar status (90 – 100 points), while 4 companies achieved Pace-setter (80 – 89 points).
Regional Analysis
- Macao leads the region, reaching a Pace-setter average.
- International brands maintained stable leadership, reflecting global best practices.
- Mainland China recorded the fastest growth, with scores rising from 49.50 to 56.14, showing rapid ESG adoption momentum.
Stakeholder Engagement
Customer and Investor impacts show a strong upward trend, reflecting growing strategic focus on these areas to drive business sustainability.
Community and Environment impacts show modest recovery, likely due to the resumption of related initiatives post-pandemic.
Supplier Impact scores remain low and fluctuating, due to sparse reporting on supplier audits, feedback, certifications, and joint initiatives.
